Find the Sight Word or Spelling Word Game

Another way to make learning sight words, or spelling words fun!

Cut 3x5 cards in half or use post it notes. Write the child's site words, or have the child write a spelling word on each card/paper.

Hide the words around the house for the child to find.

For site words, have another set of cards/notes laid out on a table. As the child finds the words he can put the word next to its matching word on the table

Sight Words or Spelling Words Memory Game

With school back in session, here is a way to make learning letters, sight words or spelling words fun!

cut 3x5 cards in half. On each half write the letter or word your child is learning.
mix up the cards and turn them over face down.
Play like memory- during their turn, a  player turns over two cards.
When a player gets a match, they have to use the word in a sentence (or think of a word that starts with that letter if playing with letters)

At the end of the game, have the child read what words (or letters) they matched up, and read the words/letters you matched up. Then have them count how many matches they got and how many you got, and figure out how many more matches the winner had.

Pack your cards in your Packed 4 Fun backpack to take with you to brother's soccer practice, mom's appointment, or the restaurant!

Marshmallow Math

Marshmallows do not just have to be for roasting this summer. Try some yummy fun and learning with marshmallows and toothpicks.
Children over 3 can start out by making triangles and squares and counting the sides and points (basic geometry).

Older children can create 3 dimensional cubes and other more complex shapes.

Let imaginations explore creating different structures.

caution: marshmallows are considered a choking hazard for children under 4. Use with adult supervision.

Measuring Bunny Hops

Did you get any hopping bunnies for Easter? Other times during the year the same toy is sold as hopping frogs. Press down on the back end and then let go to spring them into action.

Preschoolers and young elementary school students love them!
For some learning fun, set up a bunny (or frog) long jump competition.

Using a yard stick, measure how far the bunny traveled.

Have the child log the results of each contestant and find out the winner!

Coloring Mixing... Mess Free!

Color mixing science and exploration. What happens when you mix yellow and blue together? What if you do a lot of blue and just a little yellow? How can we make all the colors of the rainbow if we only have red, blue and yellow paint?
Children can discover it all without getting a drop of paint on themselves!

Using quart size ziploc bags works best as the sandwich bags are not as sturdy. Adding a little shaving cream in with the paint makes it a little easier for children to mush the paints together and it lightens the colors a little bit.

Next the children could get messy, and paint with their personally created colors.
